Burt Ward is best known for his role of Robin the Boy Wonder on the classic TV series, Batman. Burt Ward was born on July 6, 1945 in Los Angeles, California. His actual name was Bert John Jervis Jr.
His first audition ever was for the role of Robin. Prior to acting, Ward was selling real estate. You can see part of his actual audition for Batman by scrolling down and clicking on the video. He was required to do flips and some Karate.
Producer William Dozier was hesitant about casting Burt Ward since he felt he was too big for the part but Ward assured him he wouldn’t grow any more. Dozier laughed and was impressed with Ward.
Ward screen tested with Ada, West who at the time were both up against Lyle Waggoner for the role of Batman and Peter Deyell for the role of Robin. The studio chose West and Ward for the roles of Batman and Robin and the rest is history. Dozier’s idea was to over do Batman to make it funny for adults and yet still appeal to younger audiences.
On the first day of shooting, Ward was told he had to perform a few stunts himself because his mask only covered his eyes and the audience would realize that a stuntman and not Ward was riding in the Batmobile. Ward ended up getting hurt many times during the course of the series and ended up going to the emergency room several times.
Robin’s job was to help Batman solve riddles, decipher clues and figure out their villain’s next move. He was always shouting “holy this” or “holy that.” According to CinemaBlend , there were a total of 378 holys over the course of 120 episodes.
In the first season, ABC was contacted by the Catholic Legion of Decency because of the way Ward’s costume fit, specifically his tight fitting trunks. The Boy Wonder’s bulge was getting unwanted attention and the costume department tried to be creative but nothing work. They tried dancer’s belts, thick jockey shorts, padded underwear and a jockstrap.
After the show was cancelled, didn’t do much acting. He would often do personal appearances at comic book and toy shows where he would actually dress up as Robin along side Adam West. Ward also voiced Robin in the cartoon, The New Adventures of Batman and Superfriends: The Legendary Super Powers Show. He also reprised the role of Robin in Legends of the Superheroes comedy that also featured Adam West as Batman and Frank Gorshin as the Riddler.
In 2003, Ward starred in Return to the Batcave which reunited him with some of his cast members from the classic Batman TV Show. Adam West, Frank Gorshin, Julie Newmar and, Lee Meriwether co-starred in this made for TV biographical comedy.
For the 50th anniversary of the Classic Batman TV series, Warner Bros. announced an animated feature that would reunite Burt Ward again with his co-stars Adam West and Julie Newmar. Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders was released in 2016 and was an awesome tribute to the TV show bringing together that campy humor for adults and fun for children.
In 2017, Warner Bros. also released Batman vs. Two-Face which starred William Shatner as Two-Face. Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar.

Ward founded an organization called Gentle Giants that is dedicated to rescuing dogs. He also manufactures his own dog food which has been show to increase the lifespan of canines.
